A Word About Inner City Ministries

Inner City Ministries began in the early 1970s as a project at the Radnor congregation, meeting to teach the Bible to children one night a week. During this period, the program placed a minister in each of the Nashville Inner City Projects to work with families and set up Bible study periods. 

Classes began with one night a week then two and now three nights, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The Inner City Church meets at the Vultee building on Sunday and Wednesday for its regular services. 

There are several cities other than Nashville with an Inner City work; some of them are Memphis, Murfreesboro, Chattanooga, Montgomery, Mobile, Pensacola, and Paducah. Each city is responsible for its own program and expenses.

The group that meets in this building each Monday evening comes from the Edgehill/Vinehill area between 8th Avenue So. and 12th Avenue So. The age range for our group is 3-6 years of age. The classes meet during the regular school year usually 27-28 weeks depending upon holidays and weather conditions. 

We strive to have a teacher and one (1) helper per class, but it would be great to have 3-4 helpers in each classroom. This additional help would allow more individual attention to each child.

We plan for 50 children and will have pretty close to that number at least once during in the year. Our average attendance will be 33-35 for the year based on figures for the past four years. 

Our program here is Bible centered not games. Our curriculum is one that covers the Bible in four (4) years beginning with Genesis and going through Revelation. We spend two years in the Old Testament and two years in the New Testament. 

At the present time this is the only congregation within the system of Inner City Ministries of Nashville that has an organized curriculum for study. Other congregations use materials furnished by the Inner City itself similar to that which is used on Sunday mornings or whatever materials they can find as was done here in the past.

Inner City Ministries is working on an organized study curriculum for all age groups and hope to have it completed in the very near future.
