100th
Anniversary Celebration was held on
Sunday, Sept. 14th, 2003
The Granny White
church of Christ celebrated 100 years of service to the Lord on Sunday,
September 14, 2003. When the Nashville Bible School, founded in 1891, moved to
its present location on David Lipscomb's farm, a congregation was organized to
serve faculty, students, and community. The first service was held in the fall
of 1903 at the time classes began.
For the first 50 years, the church met on the campus, but in
1953 it moved into its present building adjacent to David Lipscomb College, now
Lipscomb University. Numerous people with strong ties to the school have been a
part of this church's history including several former presidents. Among those
who have worshiped here are David and Margaret Lipscomb, H. Leo Boles, Batsell
Baxter, Charles R. Brewer, S. P. Pittman, and Willard Collins. The church still
counts among its members a large number of Lipscomb students, kindergarten
through graduate school. Dale Jenkins, Doug Burleson, and Scott Tillman minister
to the church under the oversight of nine elders.
The centennial featured former ministers speaking for the
9:00 Bible study hour and the current minister speaking for the 10:00 service.
Following lunch, the congregation had a song service in which songs from the
decades of the 100 years were sung.
